Choose an output mode first
Settings › Playback Settings › Output Mode:
| Mode | Description |
|---|---|
| Effects & Processing | Uses the full processing graph for EQ, dynamics, reverb, spatial audio, ReplayGain, playback speed, crossfade, app volume, and visualization. |
| High Fidelity Direct | Shortest signal path: bypasses EQ, dynamics, reverb, spatial audio, ReplayGain, speed changes and crossfade, and matches the sample rate automatically. Volume still works, except during DSD direct output. |
This mode mainly matters with an external DAC or headphone amplifier. Over Bluetooth or the built-in speakers the audio is processed again anyway, so the difference is rarely audible.
If the equalizer, effects, speed changes or crossfade have no effect, the most common reason is that High Fidelity Direct is in use.
Equalizer
Settings › Equalizer: turn on Equalizer, choose an EQ preset or adjust bands by hand, and use Save as Preset. Switch by Output Device lets different headphones or speakers use different presets automatically.
Other effects
Settings › Audio Effects: Reverb (including Wet/Dry Mix) and Compressor (Threshold, Attack Time, Release Time and more).
Audio options in playback settings
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| ReplayGain | Automatically adjust volume based on ReplayGain tags embedded in audio files. Mode: Track or Album |
| Spatial Audio | Places playback in a virtual front soundstage through Apple's spatial audio renderer. |
| Head Tracking | On supported AirPods, the soundstage stays anchored as you move your head. |
| Crossfade | Smoothly blend the end of one track into the beginning of the next. Transition Mode: Smart / Fixed |
| Gapless Playback | Seamlessly transition between tracks without any silence gap. Gapless playback is available for queued tracks. Crossfade turns it off. |
| Skip leading silence / Skip trailing silence | Removes silence at the start and end of tracks |
| Match Output Sample Rate | Switches the output to each song's sample rate to avoid resampling. Bluetooth, AirPlay and some other outputs ignore it; the player shows the rate actually used. |
| Switch Sample Rate Within Albums | When sample rates differ, the next song is prepared ahead and the switch happens in the previous song’s closing silence where possible. Tracks on the same album stay continuous by default (resampled) and the rate switches when the album changes. Turn this on to switch inside an album too; there may be a very short pause between tracks. |
| DSD Playback | Automatic, Prefer DoP or Convert to PCM |
| Play Alongside Other Apps | Doesn't interrupt sound from other apps |
Mac: exclusive output device
On a Mac, Primuse can take exclusive use of an external DAC. The player shows "Exclusive" or "Not exclusive"; if another app is using the device or the device doesn't support it, Primuse switches to shared output automatically.
