Offline downloads vs. audio cache
| Offline Downloads | Audio Cache | |
|---|---|---|
| How it's created | You choose Download or turn on Always Download | Saved automatically during playback |
| Space limit | Offline downloads are stored separately and don't count toward the audio cache limit. Clearing the cache won't remove them, and the system won't purge them when storage runs low. | Limited by Audio Cache Limit; can be cleared at any time |
| Notes | Plays even without a connection | When enabled, played songs are cached locally for faster playback next time. When disabled, temporary files are removed after playback. |
Downloading songs
Choose Download from a playlist, album, or song menu, or turn on Always Download for a playlist.
- While downloading you can Stop Download; if a download fails, choose Retry Download or Clear Failed Download.
- Use the Downloaded filter in the library to show downloaded songs.
- Local files (for example songs on an external drive) are already on the device, so there is no download action for them.
Always keep offline
When Always Download is on for a playlist, songs added to it are downloaded automatically. A song you remove from the download on its own is downloaded again; to remove it, turn this switch off first. Always Download will also be turned off for this playlist.
Managing downloaded songs
Settings › Storage › Offline Downloads: see the number of songs and space used, select several, or choose Remove All. After removal, playing these songs requires a connection.
Offline cache quality
Storage › Offline Cache Quality: Cached songs are converted on this device to AAC at the selected bitrate. This works for every source, so lossless files from cloud drives, WebDAV or a NAS take a fraction of the space. The original file is still downloaded first and only the converted copy is kept once conversion finishes. Lossless files are always converted; lossy files only when their bitrate is clearly higher. Original keeps the source file. Songs already cached as originals can be converted in place with Convert Cached Songs, without downloading them again.
Songs already cached can be converted afterwards with Convert Cached Songs.
Other items in storage management
| Item | Description |
|---|---|
| Audio Cache | Audio cached automatically during playback |
| Source File Cache | Source File Cache holds complete files downloaded from your music sources to play formats such as WMA or APE, plus some sources' downloads and cover images. It does not count toward the audio cache limit and is downloaded again when needed. |
| Image Cache | Images loaded while browsing |
| Cover Art & Lyrics | Saved artwork and lyrics; you can set Artwork & Lyrics Space Limit |
| Incomplete partials, Removed-source leftovers | Leftover files that are safe to clear |
Download All Artwork and Lyrics: Fetches covers and lyrics that aren't on this device yet from each music source, including audiobooks and podcasts, and reads .lrc and other lyrics files in folders. Only the sources' own lyrics are used; when a server's lyrics are garbled, a readable copy is fetched online.
Sending cache directly between devices
Storage › Cache Sync: Send existing audio cache directly to another Primuse device
- On the receiving device, choose to receive in Cache Sync and keep the page open.
- On the sending device: On the other device, open Cache Sync and choose Receive cache. Then select that device here to send.
- Start with up to three missing files to verify the connection, then sync the rest.
Cache files are sent directly over the local network. Primuse does not download them again from the media server. If nearby devices don't appear: If a nearby device does not appear, choose Receive cache on it, copy its connection code, and paste it here. The code is valid only while that app session is running. Direct connections still require local network access.
