Supported devices and systems
| Device | Minimum system (from the source configuration) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone, iPad | iOS / iPadOS 18.0 | The main app; can add every type of music source |
| Mac | macOS 15.0 | A native Mac app with a sidebar, menu bar and desktop lyrics |
| Apple TV | tvOS 17.0 | A separate TV interface; can receive music sources from your iPhone via iCloud |
| Apple Watch | watchOS 10.0 | Controls playback on your iPhone, or plays offline songs transferred to the watch |
Some features need a newer system. For example, the model download component needed for karaoke vocal separation is only available on iOS, macOS and tvOS 26 and later. Check the App Store page for the actual minimum version.
Primuse doesn't provide music itself and doesn't need a Primuse account. It plays music from your own NAS, media servers, cloud drives and local files, and optionally your Apple Music subscription library.
First launch
The first time you open the app, you see a few introduction pages:
- "Your music, your servers": your music plays from your own devices and services.
- "Bring your music together": the source types you can connect.
- "Complete your library": filling in artwork, lyrics and album details; Enable and reorder them in Settings > Metadata & Scraping.
- "More than listening on your phone" and "Make Home feel like yours": playback, casting and personalizing Home.
- "Yours, end to end": Audio files never leave your sources; Library settings sync through your iCloud only.
At the end, tap Add your first source to add one right away, or Maybe later to go straight into the app. On Mac, onboarding has 3 steps and you can tap Skip intro.
The main screens
On iPhone there are four tabs at the bottom: Home, Library, Search and Settings. Tap the mini player at the bottom of any screen to open the player.
On Mac, use the sidebar: add and manage music sources in its Sources section. Settings are in the menu bar under Primuse › Settings… (⌘,).
Add your first music source
The in-app guide "Add a source in three steps" summarizes the flow. In detail:
- Open Settings › Manage Sources (in the Library group) and tap + (Add Source) in the top-right corner.
- Choose a type on Select Source Type. Devices found on the same local network are listed at the top (Scanning local network...).
- Enter the server address and account. Just enter the server address — the port and encryption are confirmed automatically.
- Select the folders that contain your music and tap Done; the scan starts automatically. You can leave this page; scanning continues in the background..
For a cloud drive, just authorize as prompted. Media servers such as Navidrome and Jellyfin sync the whole library after you sign in, without choosing folders.
Expected result: songs appear in your library in batches while scanning. When the scan ends, browse by song, album, artist and more in Library, or search in Search. Artwork, lyrics and other details keep loading in the background.
Just want to try local files first
In the Local section of Select Source Type:
- Reference a Folder / Reference Files: Play selected audio from its original location.
- Copy to Primuse: Store an app-managed copy for offline playback.
- Device transfer: Send music, lyrics and folders to another Primuse device on your local network.
Common questions
- Can't find a source type? Ugreen and fnOS aren't in the add list in this version; even if such a device is discovered on your network, it can't be selected ("Awaiting public API · Not yet available"). For all types see Add and manage music sources: supported types, where to add them, and everyday actions.
- Can't connect? See A music source won't connect, sign-in fails, or the scan finds no songs.
- Songs missing after a scan? See What to do when songs are missing from your library or you can't find a song.
